- Jul 31, 2019 The free ZoneAlarm Antivirus + Firewall is the combination of ZA's popular free firewall and a new antivirus application which may be better categorized as anti-spyware, anti-malware and antivirus combined into one simple application.
ZoneAlarm has long been perhaps the most popular free firewall available, and millions have used it to block unwanted access to their computers. ZoneAlarm generally works well with antivirus software, too, but perhaps you'd be interested in a free antivirus solution that actually incorporates ZoneAlarm's firewall? That's CheckPoint's ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus Plus Firewall. ZoneAlarm Antivirus not only protects your system from unwanted intrusions, viruses, and other malware, but it also includes anti-phishing, site authentication, identity protection, and download management features. It's also available as a premium package. The free tool lacks the premium version's parental controls, virtual browsing, PC tune-up, and support features.
ZoneAlarm Antivirus's firewall component and Identity & Data Protection were active in the program's start window, though the main component, the antivirus protection, was disabled due to a conflict with our existing antivirus solution, which we'd left active to gauge ZoneAlarm's response. We disabled our existing tool, and ZoneAlarm automatically picked up the slack, showing our status for Real-Time Protection, Antivirus Scan, and Antivirus Update. The first thing to do when you're installing a new antivirus program is to update its definitions and make a baseline scan of your computer. We did that, choosing Full Scan with Archives, which we're glad to say found no bad stuff. You can schedule scans, of course, and ZoneAlarm's Settings let you customize scans, too, as well as launch targeted scans, set exceptions, view quarantined files, enable On Access scanning (which scans when you access files) and other options. One feature ZoneAlarm offers is Behavioral Scanning, which includes an extensive checklist of options the program can monitor for suspicious activity. The familiar ZoneAlarm Firewall includes Application Control, which blocks unauthorized access by programs. The Identity & Data tab includes two protection features, Web and Identity, plus 5 GB of online storage space.
ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus Plus Firewall has both online and offline Help options, basic support, and some extras like Top 10 Questions. We found it as easy to use as the standalone Firewall, and a lot easier than using ZoneAlarm's Firewall with another antivirus program. ZoneAlarm has stepped up as a significant player in free antivirus solutions.

ZoneAlarm is an internet security software company that provides consumer antivirus and firewall products. ZoneAlarm was developed by Zone Labs, which was acquired in March 2004 by Check Point.[2] ZoneAlarm's firewall security products include an inbound intrusion detection system, as well as the ability to control which programs can create outbound connections. In August 2015, ZoneAlarm introduced a 100% virus-free guarantee with its Extreme Security product.[3]
Technical description[edit]
In ZoneAlarm, program access is controlled by way of 'zones', into which all network connections are divided. The 'trusted zone' generally includes the user's local area network and can share resources such as files and printers. The while the 'Internet zone' includes everything not in the trusted zone. The user can specify which 'permissions' (trusted zone client, trusted zone server, Internet zone client, Internet zone server) to give to a program before it attempts to access the Internet (e.g. before running it for the first time) or, alternatively, ZoneAlarm will ask the user to give the program permission on its first access attempt.[4]
'True Vector Internet Monitor', also known as 'TrueVector Security Engine', is a Windows service that is the core of ZoneAlarm. In the processes list its Image Name is 'vsmon.exe'. This monitors internet traffic and generates alerts for disallowed access. 'Operating System Firewall' (OSFirewall) monitors programs and generates alerts when they perform suspicious behaviors. The OSFirewall is useful in preventing rootkits and other spyware. 'SmartDefense Advisor' is the name ZoneAlarm give to a service available in all versions that helps the user with certain types of alert, using a database of trusted program signatures to provide the user with advice on allowing or denying Internet access in response to program requests.
The current free version of Zonealarm has an ad for the paid version that pops up every single time you turn on your computer after a short delay.
Awards and certifications[edit]
Both the free and Pro editions of ZoneAlarm Firewall were designated as PCMag's Editor’s Choice in 2017.[5][6]
Controversies[edit]
As of January 2006 ZoneAlarm was reportedly[7] sending data to the company's servers in a covert fashion. A developer dismissed allegations that ZoneAlarm was spying on its clients, saying that it was an issue related to software updates and that it would be fixed.[8]
In December 2007, a browser toolbar was shipped with ZoneAlarm as an opt-out, which was not well received.[9] This was removed in later versions of the software.
In September 2, 2010, the free version of ZoneAlarm started showing a 'Global Virus Alert' popup as a scareware tactic to get users to switch to their paid security suite.[10] The popup was turned off by ZoneAlarm marketing team after an uproar from disgruntled users, many of whom uninstalled the software.[11][12]
